In business since 1986, brothers Doug and Wally have over 40 years combined experience as makers of fine furniture. After growing up on a dairy farm, both acquired  four-year degrees from Eastern Kentucky University. Doug and Wally are not merely woodworkers. From the beginning, they have adhered to the highest standards in craftsmanship, design and finish. A quote from a mentor in the late 1970's has played a big part in every piece they produce. “Craftsmanship goes far beyond the manipulation of one’s hands – it’s a state of mind that is satisfied with nothing less than excellence.” Doug’s expertise lies in the area of design and craftsmanship, while Wally’s lies in the area of craftsmanship and finishing.

The latter part of the company name, Haley-Daniels, comes from Doug’s son, Daniel, now age 15, began turning small bowls and pens at the early age of 10.

Haley-Daniels is not limited to the styles and pieces you may view on this site. The customer’s ideas or sketches are always welcome. With a basic idea, Doug can help the customer with the design and right wood selection for that special piece.

Doug and Wally’s work has won awards in design and craftsmanship both locally and nationally. Their customer base extends coast to coast and into Canada.

 INSPIRATION FROM THE PAST

While growing up on a dairy farm,  my fascination with nature began. I was interested in the shapes and construction of things regardless of what it was made of. I remember making and tearing up things at the age of eight. Wood was my choice of material because of the few farm hand tools I had available. I remember being fascinated with things such as a simple wood door latch in the dairy barn and the intersecting beams and braces that were joined with mortise and tenons and pegged to the 48 foot long hand hewn beams in the tobacco barn.

Hiking through the woods, climbing trees and seeing odd things and shapes fueled that fascination even more. It wasn’t until high school and college that I had access to real woodworking tools.

In the late 1970’s I bought and operated a sawmill on the family farm. The smell of freshly sawn lumber on a cool fall morning is one I’ll never forget. After a few years of sawmilling and being fascinated with the colors and textures of wood, I decided to move on to turning bowls. It was very rewarding to turn a large chunk of wood on the lathe not knowing what colors, grain patterns and characteristics I would see until I was done. While the sawmill and bowl turning was rewarding and fun, I decided I needed some money to compliment my fun. With that thought I begin building furniture and started my own business in 1986. A few years later, my brother Wally and my son Daniel joined me in creating those special pieces that grace homes in 25  U.S. states and Canada.
